USC Hospitals Celebrate Certified Nurses

The USC hospitals celebrated national Certified Nurses Day March 19 with a special breakfast to recognize its own certified nurses. The festivities were held in the USC University Hospital cafe for the more than 100 certified nurses at USC University Hospital and USC Norris Cancer Hospital. There are all different kinds of nurse speciality certifications including oncology, medical-surgical, and intensive care specialities.

Sheri Gottstein, a USC University Hospital nurse with an operating room specialty, hoped the breakfast would encourage other nurses to receive board certifications as well. "A lot of hospitals don't recognize their certified nurses," Gottstein said. "So it's nice that the USC hospitals are doing this. It encourages other nurses to go for it." Gina Greco, director of Evidence Based Practice at USC University Hospital, said she spearheaded the event to acknowledge nurses who take the time hone their skills with a speciality certification. "It shows their commitment to excellent patient care and nursing professionalism."
